13 bids from nine interested parties were submitted for seven of the islands auctioned off for resort development, according to the Ministry of Tourism.
In April, the tourism ministry put 16 islands from six atolls up for bid for resort development. However, only seven islands received proposals by the deadline.
List of the seven islands:
- HA. Velifinolhu
- M. Seedhee Huraa (including Seedhee Huraa Veligandu)
- Th. Kaaddoo
- Th. Olhufushi (including the sandbank)
- L. Bodumunyafushi
- GA. Funadhooviligillaa
- GDh. Kandahalagalaa
Out of the seven islands, M. Seedhee Huraa and GDh. Kandahalagalaa received bids from three interested parties while HA. Velifinolhu had received bids from two.
Furthermore, the tourism ministry stated that the largest lease acquisition cost proposal made for an island was 140% higher than the minimum lease acquisition cost.
Ali Shinan, Director of Planning at the Ministry of Tourism, stated that no decision has been made on the islands that did not receive a proposal. He stated that the decision would be made at the policy level following an assessment of the islands.
Shinan said that the decision to tender the islands that did not receive a bid or to tender them after the third phase list of islands would be made after evaluating the bids received for the seven islands.
According to the tourism ministry, the review of the bids received for the seven islands is scheduled to be completed within three weeks.
