The President’s Office has asked the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) to investigate Hiya public housing scheme irregularities and discriminatory allocation of flats during former President Yameen Abdul Gayoom’s administration.
President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih formed a committee to look into alleged wrongdoings committed by the previous administration during the allocation of flats for two social housing initiatives.
The Committee Investigating Public Housing Schemes had dismissed the Yameen administration’s list of housing scheme recipients in favor of a new list of 6,720 individuals.
According to the President’s Office, the Committee’s report highlighting probable irregularities and wrongdoings was forwarded to the ACC for further investigation.
Hassan Manik, an ACC media official, said that the commission had begun investigating the case provided by the President’s Office, but he did not reveal any more details.
Some irregularities identified by the Committee
- Living conditions were not taken into account when assigning points to each category.
- Points assigned in the absence of a proper point allocating guideline.
- Individuals were assigned flats without regard for land ownership.
