Mayor of Addu City, Ali Nizar has criticized the government’s lack of effort to find a solution to the increasing drug abuse in Addu City.
In a tweet posted by Mayor Nizar, he claimed that the government has failed to take necessary action in prevention of drug abuse in Addu City and the entire Maldives which has led to an increase in crime rates across the Maldives.
Moreover, Nizar further claimed that daylight robberies, snatching, and gang violence has increased in Addu city over the past month and that the general public lives in constant fear. He added that there are no proper facilities established in the city to hold criminals and that known drug lords and thieves are free among the public.
Mayor Nizar said that the Commissioner of Police, Mohamed Hameed, had promised to increase the capacity of the police in the city during the meeting held last week, but no proper actions were taken. Nizar further scrutinized the current and past governments citing that the current situation of Addu City and across the Maldives was the result of the central government’s failure to take necessary actions in prevention of drug abuse.
Mayor Nizar’s criticism against President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih’s administration comes just a few days after Addu City Council met with the President to discuss the issues of the city in which the council members expressed their gratitude to the President for the numerous developmental projects initiated by President Solih’s administration.
