Adhuham Rasheed, who admitted to detonating an IED in the attempted assassination of People’s Majlis Speaker Mohamed Nasheed on May 6, was sentenced to more than 23 years in jail by the Criminal Court on Tuesday.
The 26-year-old was charged with four terrorism-related offences: carrying out an act of terrorism, conspiracy to commit an act of terrorism, attempted murder with a sharp-edged tool or hazardous weapon, and supporting a terrorist organization.
However, he had entered a plea deal under the Criminal Procedure Code to remove the charge of conspiracy to commit an act of terrorism, which lowered his sentence from 37 years to 23 years.
During the Criminal Court hearing, Adhuham told the court that he admits to committing a crime and apologized to everyone impacted by the incident, claiming that his actions were motivated by his religious convictions at the time.
