Attorney General’s Office (AGO) has begun drafting a law to review the composition of the Judicial Service Commission (JSC).
In a statement, AGO revealed an amendment to the constitution is being drafted in an effort to review and revise the composition of JSC. The statement noted the bill will include amendments to Article 157 of the constitution, in accordance with relevant international norms and principles to ensure that the JSC is free from biased political influence.
As per the statement, the amendment will be proposed during the ongoing session of the parliament. AGO will hold consultations with the Supreme Court, High Court, lower courts, and the JSC in the coming weeks to discuss the bill.
The AGO noted that reviewing the composition of the JSC and amending the constitution is one of the key plaedges made by the government to reform the judiciary of the Maldives.
