In a heartfelt demonstration of solidarity, Maldivian media stations organized a one-day special telethon titled ‘Aharemen Falastheenaaeku,’ which translates to ‘We are with Palestine.’ The telethon, aimed at raising awareness about the plight of Palestinians and collecting funds to aid them during the ongoing conflict, kicked off at 10:30 am on Tuesday and continued until midnight.
Throughout the day, a total of MVR 12,989,372.72 and USD 8,672.38 poured in as donations, showcasing the generosity and support of the Maldivian community. Notably, STO and its subsidiaries made a remarkable contribution of MVR 1 million, marking the single largest donation received.
Leading up to the telethon, television stations held pre-shows from 05:00 pm to 06:00 pm every day since Saturday. This period was crucial for galvanizing support and raising awareness about the urgent need for assistance in the midst of the Israel-Palestine conflict.
Gaza, a region at the center of the ongoing conflict, has witnessed a tragic escalation in violence since the surprise attack by Gaza’s ruling Hamas on Israel, which occurred on October 7th. This attack, the deadliest on Israel in decades, led to Israel declaring war against Palestine.
The toll from relentless strikes on Gaza has surged to at least 3,000, with over 10,000 individuals suffering injuries of various degrees. Israel’s response has extended to cutting off water and electricity supplies to Gaza, further worsening the living conditions in an area that has endured a crippling siege since 2007.
The success of the ‘Aharemen Falastheenaaeku’ telethon reflects the profound empathy and commitment of the Maldivian community in supporting the Palestinian people during these trying times. The funds raised will undoubtedly play a crucial role in providing aid and relief to those affected by the conflict.
