A deadly fire that broke out in Male’ City last night has killed at least 10 people and injured several others.
The fire broke out in the garage in M. Nirufehi, located near the Maaveyo Magu, around 12:30 am. According to Maldives National Defense Force (MNDF) Fire and Rescue Service, 14 people were evacuated out of the building, while nine people were reported missing.
Eight of them were found dead, while the ninth was rescued with severe burns. He was taken to the Indhira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) and is reported to be in critical condition.
Firefighters later recovered two more bodies from the building, raising the death toll to 10.
The Fire and Rescue Service is being supported by the Maldives Police Service, National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), and Maldivian Red Crescent. Residents in nearby buildings have been relocaed temporarily to Maafannu Stadium.
