The Elections Commission has announced that by-elections for the vacant People’s Majlis seat for Komandoo constituency would be conducted on February 5.
The Komandoo seat became vacant following the death of MP Hussain Waheed on Tuesday, at the age of 53, in ADK Hospital in Male’ City, after a year-long battle with cancer.
Ismail Habeeb, deputy chairman of the Elections Commission, tweeted on Thursday afternoon that the Majlis had formally informed the commission about the vacancy of the Komandoo seat.
He added that the commission had consequently decided to hold the by-elections on February 5.
Hussain Waheed, who also served a five-year term in the 17th People’s Majlis, was being treated at ADK Hospital after his condition worsened in the last two weeks. He had spent many days in Dubai for cancer treatment at the beginning of the year before returning to the Majlis on March 29.
