President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih’s list of potential candidates for the vacant position on the Elections Commission has been forwarded to the Committee on Independent Institutions for evaluation.
The list of potential candidates was read out on the floor of the People’s Majlis at the first sitting of the third session on Monday. Mohamed Asif, Shahula Ismail, Azleema Ahmed, Ahmed Mansoor, and Mariyam Haneefa Khalid are among the president’s recommended candidates.
After Ahmed Shareef, the former president of the Elections Commission, resigned in June, a vacancy on the Commission arose, and a new president can be elected only after the vacancy is filled.
The president of the Elections Commission must be chosen within 60 days of the position being vacant, according to the law. While public holidays are not included in the definition, the current prolonged holiday has increased it to 90 days.
