Foreign Minister Abdulla Shahid has stated that the Chinese government intends to send an additional 400,000 doses of a COVID-19 vaccine to assist Maldives in its attempts to fully vaccinate the entire population.
Minister Shahid told a local news outlet that the Chinese government assured Maldives of extra COVID-19 vaccine doses during a phone call between President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih and China’s President Xi Jinping on July 16.
Following the phone call, President Solih tweeted that he looks forward to revitalised Maldives-Sino relations and thanked President Xi for China’s assistance for Maldives development; however, he did not give any further specifics regarding any promised Chinese aid.
Furthermore, Shahid stated that vaccination doses would be provided from China soon, but he did not clarify what type of COVID-19 vaccine or when the doses would be delivered.
China had already provided the Maldives with 200,000 doses of the Sinopharm vaccine. With the additional 400,000 doses, China would have contributed 600,000 doses to Maldives, making it the country that has donated the most COVID-19 vaccine doses.
