The Maldives Ministry of Foreign Affairs has announced that China’s State Councilor and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Wang Yi, will pay an official visit to the Maldives in January 2022.
This would be the first visit to the nation by a Chinese high-ranking government official since the end of former President Abdulla Yameen’s administration, which enjoyed tight connections with China.
The state councilor is visiting the Maldives at the request of the Maldives’ Minister of Foreign Affairs, Abdulla Shahid, during his November 2021 visit to China.
The visit is scheduled on January 7, 2022, to mark the 50th anniversary of the beginning of diplomatic ties between the Maldives and China.
According to the Chinese embassy, the state councilor will make a courtesy call on President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih and will head the Chinese team for official negotiations between the two nations during his visit to the Maldives.
