As tensions between the two escalates, Male’ City Council has revoked the land registration it signed with Housing Development Corporation (HDC) for Hulhumale’ and taken control of the area.
After Deputy Mayor Ahmed Nareesh filed the request during a City Council meeting on Wednesday, the decision was passed by a majority vote of 12 councilors.
Hulhumale’ is under the jurisdiction of the council according to the constitution, but it was put under the authority of the HDC by an executive order.
The decision was made by the council amid disputes between the two over the opposition coalition’s event named “Kotharu Koshi,” which is set to take place at Hulhumale’ Phase II this weekend.
In response to the announcement made by the opposition coalition, the HDC issued a statement saying that every event in Hulhumale’ required prior written authorization from the company, and that the opposition had not requested permission to stage their gathering.
