The Maldives Correctional Service is working on installing signal jamming equipment in Maafushi prison so that detainees do not have access to cellular service, according to Commissioner of Prisons (CP) Ahmed Mohamed.
CP Ahmed claimed on a PSM News show about further reinforcing prison measures that they are planning on attaching jammers to the Maafushi jail this year so that detainees cannot use mobile phones within the prison.
The Commissioner of Prions stated that jammers were previously put in the Maafushi prison, but they were ineffective and eventually broke down due to corrosion.
He also mentioned that they are currently investigating the type of equipment that should be used in Maldives prisons. The installations are expected to be completed within the next year, according to the Commissioner of Prisons.
Prison officers have been accused of assisting convicts in bringing commodities such as mobile phones and drugs into the prison. During the raid at Maafushi prison last month, police discovered a total of 43 phones.
