The Local Government Authority (LGA) has announced that the newly elected local council members and women’s development committee members will be taking their oaths online, due to the current COVID-19 situation.
Speaking at the press conference held last night by Health Emergency Operations Center (HEOC), Director General of LGA, Adam Shareef said that they do not plan to have any further delays, as it has been delayed for a long time. The oath taking ceremony will be held as announced, on May 17th 2021.
Shareef also added that oath taking will be carried out at the council secretariats and will follow necessary safety measures. Moreover, the public can witness the ceremony through an online meeting link.
The Local Council Elections saw MDP win the majority of 71 islands in Maldives, while PPM won the majority of 64 councils in the elections. MDP won 43% of the seats in the local council elections and PPM won 34.9%, and the key mayoral seat of Male’ City was won by PPM’s candidate, Dr. Muizzu.
