The daily average of fish captured by local fishing vessels is now approaching 800 tonnes, according to Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company Limited (MIFCO).
MIFCO stated that the Maldives is now witnessing a high fishing season in the southern atolls, noting that 750 tonnes of fish were captured in the southern atolls alone on December 2nd.
MIFCO said that with another 45 tonnes gathered from the northern atolls, the country’s daily average of fish caught is already approaching 800 tonnes.
Furthermore, the state-owned firm stated that growing fishing numbers create a significant demand on MIFCO’s weighing and purchasing operations, adding that it is now collaborating with two other local fishing companies to extend operations to acquire fish from vessels.
According to the most recent numbers given by the local fishermen’s association, fishing vessels in the southern atolls caught an average of 15-20 tonnes per day last week.
