In a recent presidential debate hosted by Sangu TV, Dr. Mohamed Muizz, the People’s National Congress (PNC) candidate, put forth his vision for the Maldives, emphasizing just and Islamic governance while addressing concerns about wrongful imprisonments during the previous administration.
Muizzu, who emerged as the alternative choice to former President Abdulla Yameen after Yameen was barred from elections due to his bribery and money laundering conviction, outlined his commitment to upholding the constitution’s Islamic principles in a just manner.
The PNC candidate stressed the importance of adhering to Islamic values while governing the country. He assured voters that his administration would prioritize these values, aiming to create a just and equitable society.
During the debate, Muizzu addressed concerns about wrongful imprisonments during Yameen’s government. He claimed that no one was imprisoned illegally during Yameen’s tenure, a statement that contradicts the experiences of many political figures and activists, including former President Mohamed Nasheed, Jumhooree Party leader Qasim Ibrahim, and even Yameen’s relative and former President Maumoon Abdul Gayyoom, who were all imprisoned during Yameen’s presidency.
Muizzu’s remarks during the debate reflect his stance as a candidate who seeks to distance himself from the controversies of the previous administration. As the Maldivian presidential election draws near, his pledges for just governance and adherence to Islamic principles will undoubtedly play a significant role in shaping the political discourse and voters’ decisions.
