According to the Elections Commission of the Maldives (ECM), the National Digital Identification Card is not eligible for voting purposes.
The state authorities are in the process of introducing the digital ID card to the general public, which aims to safeguard the holder’s personal information through advanced security measures. The eFaas mobile application will house all state-issued digital cards, including the digital ID card.
Ismail Habeeb, Vice President of ECM, stated that the law prohibits the use of digital ID cards for casting votes. He clarified that the digital card can only be utilized with a phone, which is not allowed inside polling stations. Nonetheless, he mentioned that conversations are underway about the possibility of using the digital card to re-register one’s voting location.
