Encrea Private Limited has been chosen to design the new national identity card, replacing the design that has been in use for 39 years. The decision was made during a cabinet meeting in 2021 to incorporate modern security features and create a smart card.
Following an open call for designs, Encrea’s submission was selected, and the company was awarded MVR 200,000 for their work. Encrea’s team included graphics designers Abdulla Shafiu and Hussain Shazif Adam, as well as business strategist Hussain Jinan and Mohammed Shamoon.
Encrea, a company that has previously worked on branding for the SAFF Championships and other national-level events, has not yet released details of the new NID card. However, it is expected that the new design will be unveiled before the upcoming elections, although it may not be implemented until after the elections. The government is also testing digital cards, but there is no word on when they will be introduced to the public.
