Environment Protection Agency (EPA) has fined the owner of ‘Ocean Surveyor’ boat over damages to Hulhumale’ reef during survey for the submarine cable project.
EPA stated that the eastern side of Hulhumale’ reef suffered damages during the survey. As such, EPA has fined ‘Ocean Surveyor’ ocean MVR 189,112.73 to be paid within 30 days.
Ocean Connect Maldives – a subsidiary of Maldives Fund Management Corporation (MFMC) – is carrying out the submarine cable project in partnership with India’s Reliance Bio company.
OCM had previously stated that this project will strengthen the digital backbone of the country and bring in revolutionary digital transformation to the Maldives. The cable is expected to be laid in Hulhumale’ by end of 2023.
