Housing Development Corporation (HDC)’s Managing Director Ahmed Suhail has stated that Farukolhufushi is no longer a separate island and it is currently a part of Hulhumale’ Phase 2.
Male’ City Council recently announced that Farukolhufushi has been allocated for local travel and event hosting. However, HDC’s Managing Director Ahmed Suhail and President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih both have said they were never consulted regarding this decision.
While speaking to a local media, HDC’s Managing Director Ahmed Suhail said that he only found out about the decision through the news and no official documents were submitted regarding the decision by the Male’ City Council. Moreover, Farukolhufushi is no longer a separate island as it is part of Hulhumale’ Phase 2. There is a plan to develop Farukolhufushi as a heritage island for Hulhumale’ Phase 2 but has not yet been implemented, he added.
Male’ City Mayor, Dr. Muizzu stated that any investments made at Farukolhufushi should benefit the residents of Male’ City and they are entitled to any investment returns made on the island.
Farukolhufushi was previously run as a resort by Club Med. The island was cleared to start the land reclamation process for Hulhumale’ Phase 2. The island is currently being used as a facility to treat COVID-19 patients.
