Minister of Economic Development and Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP)’s Chairperson Fayyaz Ismail has stated his support for a presidential governance system.
Fayyaz made the statement after Speaker Mohamed Nasheed spoke to the press about his proposed change to a parliamentarian governance system for the Maldives and the need for Fayyaz’s support to pass the motion through MDP’s Congress.
Nasheed proposed holding a public referendum to change the governance system to a parliamentary system where the government would be headed by a Prime Minister who would be a member of the parliament from the party that holds the majority seats in the parliament and the state would be headed by a President who will be elected by the public.
Speaking to local news ‘Mihaaru’, Fayyaz stated that he always preferred a presidential system for the Maldives. He added that he wants to follow through with the current constitution and the presidential system.
Nasheed hosted a special press conference today to outline his proposed change to the constitution to make way for a parliamentary governance system. He also requested support from Fayyaz as MDP’s Chairperson to make this possible. However, Nasheed had previously criticized Fayyaz several times but since has admitted that he was wrong to go against Fayyaz.
