Lhaviyani Hinnavaru, the home island of current President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, has become the battleground for fierce competition as the opposition PPM-PNC coalition’s presidential candidate, Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, challenges Solih’s influence in the region.
Dr. Mohamed Muizzu expressed his “high hopes” for a majority of support from the island during his visit to Hinnavaru. Addressing the enthusiastic crowd that welcomed him, Muizzu acknowledged the challenges but emphasized the importance of standing up against the loss of national identity and independence. He emphasized the need for unity to solve issues of national interest, highlighting the significance of the upcoming election.
Muizzu vowed to prioritize infrastructure development, particularly in reclaimed lands, aiming to address issues that have been left unresolved in the past years. He stressed that the election isn’t just about fulfilling the island’s needs but protecting matters of national significance.
On the other hand, President Solih confidently stated during a campaign rally in Hinnavaru that he believes the island will support him and his party, the main ruling MDP. President Solih urged voters to compare his administration to the 2013 administration before making their decision, positioning his track record as superior.
Solih passionately expressed his attachment to Hinnavaru, where he was born and raised until he was about 10 years old. He asserted that choosing him for a second term is in the best interest of the entire Maldives, emphasizing that nationwide development projects must be implemented for the true benefit of the Maldivian people.
With both candidates touring Lhaviyani Atoll and simultaneously visiting Kurendhoo, the competition for support from the region has intensified, setting the stage for a closely watched contest in Hinnavaru and beyond.
