The Ministry of Fisheries, Marine Resources, and Agriculture has mandated a special license for the sale and export of Sailfish.
As part of the newly published regulations regarding previously unregulated Sailfish fishing in the Maldives, the government has mandated sailfish fishing vessels and those who process sailfish for exports to seek a special permit or license from the authorities. Exporters are required to seek a ‘Catch Certificate’ from the Fisheries Ministry for each shipment and can be applied via its online ‘Keyolhu’ portal.
However, vessels which fish less than 200KG of Sailfish daily for sale in the domestic market are exempt from the new regulations.
Moreover, the regulations also include a ban on catching sailfish that is less than 60CM in lower jaw fork length and will include hefty fines for those who abuse the regulations.
