Minister of Foreign Affairs and President of the 76th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) Abdulla Shahid has stated his support for a presidential governance system.
Minister Shahid expressed his support for a presidential governance system via a tweet on Tuesday night. Minister Shahid tweeted that he supports the election of a government and the head of a government by the direct vote of the people. Legislative powers, and responsibility to make the government accountable are bestowed on the parliament. The judiciary is responsible to ensure justice. Leaders have the attribute of adhering to laws.
Minister Shahid’s support for a presidential governance system comes at a time when Speaker Mohamed Nasheed submitted a motion to MDP’s congress to hold a public referendum vote on the governance system. Moreover, other cabinet ministers such as Minister of Economy and Trade Fayyaz Ismail and Minister of Home Affairs Imran Mohamed have lended their support for a presidential governance system in line with President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih.
