According to the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) forecasts, foreigners will account for up to 32% of the Maldives’ resident population in 2021.
The NBS issued the predicted population numbers to coincide with World Population Day. According to the data, overall population in the Maldives is predicted to be about 568,362 in 2021, with foreigners accounting for 182,666.
Males make up the vast majority of foreign residents in the country, with females accounting for only 6%. The majority of foreigners are here for employment, with approximately 138,728 holding a work permit, according to Maldives Immigration.
The majority of foreign workers, almost 38 percent, have been employed in the construction industry. The tourism industry came in second at 18 percent, with foreigners working in restaurants/cafés accounting for 16 percent.
According to the most recent figures, 43,000 people are undocumented migrants, or migrants married to Maldivians, or are in the nation for reasons other than labor.
In 2019, around 40,000 undocumented migrants were registered for the Ministry of Economic Development’s attempt to minimize the number of illegal migrants in the country.
