Fuvahmulah City Mayor and MDP’s Ismail Rafeeq has been elected to the board of Local Government Authority (LGA), after beating PPM’s Male’ City Mayor Dr. Mohamed Muizzu.
Preliminary results of the LGA elections confirms Ismail Rafeeg’s victory over Dr. Mohamed Muizzu by 3 votes. Ismail Rafeeg won 24 votes while Dr. Mohammed Muizzu won 21 votes. Ismail Rafeeg won the seat of representative of city councils with the vote of councilors from the four Maldivian cities.
PNC deputy leader and K. Atoll’s council president, Ahmed Nimal was automatically elected as representative of atoll councils last month.
The latest amendment to the Decentralization Act requires the board of LGA to have a representative elected among city councilors, a representative elected among island councilors, and a representative elected among presidents of atoll councils. Moreover, the board must consist of nine members. This includes a cabinet minister appointed by the President, a female member experienced in the field of gender equality, a member experienced in governance or public administration, and a representative of civic groups.
