Maldives Corrections Services has confirmed the release of Mohamed Ahmed who won the Gadhdhoo Council presidency while imprisoned on child sexual abuse charges.
He was charged in 2015 with sexually assaulting a minor during his council presidency; he was also charged in 2020 with exposing a minor to pornographic material and possessing pornographic material.
The 2015 case against him is still pending at the Gadhdhoo Magistrate Court, while the trial for the latest charges against him is yet to start.
Mohamed Ahmed won the recently held Local Council Elections while imprisoned. He defeated his nearest competitor, ruling MDP nominee Mohamed Rizan, by an 85-vote margin.
Elections Commission (EC) President Ahmed Shareef had said that being charged with an alleged crime does not preclude one from running for office.
