President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has stated that physical work on the planned Cancer Hospital in Gan, Laamu Atoll, will begin in 2022.
He made the statement during a meeting with the Gan Island Council on Saturday at Muliaage, the president’s official residence.
Gan Island Council Vice President Ibrahim Rasheed told a local news outlet that the president had assured them that work on the Cancer Hospital will begin in June 2022.
During the discussion, Gan councillors emphasised that megaprojects like the Cancer Hospital project and the International Airport Development project planned for Gan reflect the government’s commitment to the island’s development, according to the President’s Office.
When discussing the people’s developmental requirements and concerns with the president, the councillors noted there are a lot of projects slated to be completed in Gan next year, they requested that the project work begin at the earliest convenience
Other topics of discussion included citizens’ and council’s perspectives on the need for housing projects, road development projects, shore protection projects, resolving space constraints in schools, improving health facilities, water and sanitation needs, and other developmental activities.
During the meeting, President Solih provided the most recent updates on some of the island’s projects, noting that physical work on the cancer hospital project and the tertiary hospital project development will begin next year. He also mentioned that further projects will be carried out on the island in accordance with the government’s goal.
MP for Gan Island Mohamed Wisam was also present during the meeting.
