President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has reiterated the commitment of his administration to bring those responsible for the terrorist attack against Speaker of Parliament Mohamed Nasheed on May 6, 2021 to justice.
In a tweet posted on the one year anniversary of the attack, President Solih said the whole nation was rocked one year ago by one of the worst acts of terrorism to be committed on Maldivian soil. The president said he is thankful that Speaker Nasheed survived this attack, adding the government remains determined in the efforts to bring those responsible for this crime to justice.
Maldives Police Service (MPS) arrested a total of 9 people in relation to the attack. The prime suspect of the attack, Ahmed Adhuham Rasheed, was sentenced to 23 years in prison after he was found guilty of detonating the IED by remote in an attempt to assassinate Speaker Nasheed. The trials of the remaining suspects are still ongoing.
