During an event in Raa Atoll, as part of the ongoing campaign for local council elections, President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih said installation of solar power systems in 13 islands of Raa Atoll will start this year and the projects will be opened for tender later this month.
President Solih, further, revealed these solar panels will have a combined capacity of 3.9MW and from this, solar panels to be installed in Alifushi and Maduvvari will contribute 400 kW of power, which is about 85% of power generated in these two islands. Another 450 kW solar panels to be introduced in Meedhoo, which is about 79% of its electricity needs. Innamaadhoo and Inguraidhoo will fully transition to renewable energy by adding 350 kW solar panels.
Government stated that an additional 61 islands will receive solar panels capable of producing 36 MW of power.
Last year, solar panels with a total capacity of 2.86 MW were installed in 26 different islands, as part of Government’s renewable energy transition projects. The administration reported power generation using solar energy has increased by three times in the last two years, and the annual carbon emissions have decreased by 72, 871 tonnes, while saving USD 9.6 million worth of fuel expenses.
