The government has announced that it is seeking investors to develop an international container transshipment port in the north region of the Maldives.
The Economic Ministry stated that the project is targeted to serve the biggest container ships in the world and would see the development of a modern transshipment port in Maldives.
Moreover, surveys show that the lhavandhippolhu area where the port is to be developed is in close proximity to major shipping routes from the east to the west.
It will enable Maldives to compete with major shipping ports in the Asian continent and grant access to global container terminal operators shipping lines to widen their operations.
The project is worth USD 466 million.
