Housing Development Corporation (HDC) has commenced the work of its Open Access Network in Hulhumale’.
An open-access network (OAN) refers to a horizontally layered network architecture in telecommunications, and the business model that separates the physical access to the network from the delivery of services. This is the first time such a network is being developed in the Maldives.
OAN is generally very costly to develop. HDC has said the project is very costly and has several challenges. The network is mainly laid in the ground and a duct network is placed before the cables are set. Moreover, to render out the services of the network, implementation of manholes and termination boxes are costly. Furthermore, the equipment required to maintain and monitor the network are expensive and lack of experts in the field is a major challenge itself.
However, an OAN should help to lower the price of various services since it is managed and funded by HDC.
