Health Minister Ahmed Naseem has admitted negligence by relevant medical professionals in the death of 10 year old Fathimath Mishka.
Mishka who was under home quarantine with her family in Male’ City after contracting COVID-19, suddenly started deteriorating. The family called for an ambulance at 09:00 pm to attend to her deteriorating health but had to wait for more than two hours for the ambulance, during which she became unresponsive with bleeding. The ambulance arrived at approximately 11:40 pm, and she was declared dead at Indhira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH)’s ER at 12:10 am on Wednesday, after resuscitation attempts had failed.
When asked about the alleged negligence at the HEOC press conference tonight, Health Minister Ahmed Naseem admitted that he believes the relevant professionals who attended to Mishka were negligent. He added that relevant authorities are currently investigating the case and appropriate action will be taken against those who were responsible for her tragic death.
The Health Ministry has announced immediate changes to its policies regarding ambulances and attending to emergency cases in light of the recent tragedy.
The death is also under investigation by the Human Rights Commission of Maldives (HRCM) and has criticized the failure in responding on time for an emergency case which has caused the loss of an innocent life.
