The Health Emergency Operation Center (HEOC) has announced plans to increase the bed capacity of Intensive Care Unit (ICU) At Dharumavantha Hospital and to mobilize V. Velidhoo COVID-19 isolation facility again.
As part of the new strategy to scale up its operations, HEOC stated that new beds will be added to the ICU at Dharumavantha Hospital to treat the increasing number of hospitalized COVID-19 patients as the ICU is currently operating at full capacity.
Moreover, V. Velidhoo COVID-19 isolation facility will be mobilized again to manage the current surge of COVID-19 cases.
Currently, all beds at Dharumavantha Hospital’s ICU are at full capacity. Moreover, HEOC also stated that Faarukolhufushi facility is full, and 12 beds at Hulhumale’s COVID-19 facility are being used to treat severe patients.
Presidential Spokesperson Mabrook Azeez warned that the health system is being overwhelmed by the sheer number of COVID-19 cases lately. Moreover, there is shortage of medical professionals to manage the rapid rise of COVID-19 cases in the Maldives.
Mabrook also outlined plans to add 50 more beds as an ICU ward,and the government is trying to procure more ventilators and medical professionals from abroad.
Maldives is currently bracing for the worst ever rise in COVID-19 cases, with more than 7,000 active cases and 75 deaths reported so far.
