The Health Protection Agency (HPA) has put 70 islands, or more than 35 percent of the inhabited islands, under monitoring due to the worsening COVID-19 situation.
Last month, 16 islands were put under lockdown, with no noticeable reduction in the number of daily positive cases, while this month, 56 islands have been placed under monitoring, the largest number in a single month.
Lh. Naifaru has been under monitoring for nearly two months, making it the longest period under lockdown.
According to the data, the COVID-19 situation in the capital Male’ has been the worst, with 1,518 cases reported in the city yesterday out of a total of 1,960 across the country.
Maldives is currently experiencing a hospital bed shortage for COVID-19 patients with 294 people seeking care in hospital. As a result, the government has announced plans to use private clinics to accommodate more patients.
Further, curfews have been imposed in Male’ City, Addu City, and Fuvahmulah City by the HPA to curb the spread of the virus.
