Human Rights Commission of Maldives (HRCM) has launched an investigation into possible torture of one of the terror suspects involved in a plot to blow up a school lab in Thaa Thimarafushi.
Ahsan Mohamed was arrested last year along with seven others in a counter-terrorism operation. He was charged with conspiracy to carry out an act of terrorism and possession of a document indicating support for a terrorist organization.
HRCM stated it received a report of alleged torture of a detainee on Friday and a team was dispatched to Dhoonidhoo Custodial Friday night to clarify more information about the allegation.
According to a statement released by Maldives Police Service, the detainee was removed from his jail cell on April 11th after he repeatedly blinded the camera. The police claim they used pepper spray and handcuffed him after he refused to return to his cell before issuing multiple threats against the police officers.
Furthermore, the Police Professional Standards Command and Use of Force Review Committee will be investigating the actions for compliance with laws and regulations.
