Former President and Parliament Speaker Mohamed Nasheed has said that he will not compete against President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih in the upcoming 2023 Presidential Election.
Nasheed seeks to change the current presidential system to a parliamentary system before the 2023 presidential elections. However, President Solih has so far refused to publicly support the idea. Moreover, President Solih has not yet confirmed whether he will compete for a second term in the office.
In an interview given to The Hindu while visiting Sri Lanka on an official trip, Former President Nasheed said he has always contemplated competing in the election but does not see a scenario in which he and President Solih will face each other in the election. Moreover, Nasheed praised the presidency of his colleague and the challenges the current administration has overcome.
Nasheed also assured that he will do anything to keep MDP in power and it is essential that MDP stay in power to uphold democracy in the Maldives.
Current ruling party MDP will elect its candidate for the 2023 Presidential Election through a primary hosted within the party.
That means He will definitely compete against Solih.
