An Indian national who smuggled 3.9 KG of illegal drugs into the Maldives has been fined MVR 100,000 and sentenced to life in jail by the Criminal Court.
The individual was arrested at the Velana International Airport (VIA) after the airport security found illegal drugs in his luggage. The state lodged smuggling illegal drug charges against the individual.
The Criminal Court stated in their verdict that the drugs were found in the personal luggage of the individual while he was present and he claimed that someone else would come to receive the drugs at the time thus he was in the know that illegal drugs were in his luggage.
The Criminal Court also added that the individual did not initiate the Control Delivery Operation despite knowing someone was coming to receive the drugs, which further proves he is illicit and responsible for smuggling the drugs.
The Criminal Court today fined him MVR 100,000 which he is obligated to pay in 12 months and sentenced to life in prison excluding the time he has served in jail so far.
