The foreign national who committed suicide while in police custody last week was a British citizen detained for drug-related offenses, according to the Maldives Police Service.
Police announced today that two people were apprehended after attempting to smuggle 3.4 kilograms of drugs into the Maldives in late April, as part of an operation coordinated with Maldives Customs.
The eight-day operation resulted in the arrest of a 30-year-old male British national and a 43-year-old male Thai national.
Police said that two rubber packets suspected of containing drugs were discovered during a search of the British national’s belongings.
The British man later committed suicide by hanging himself while in police custody at the Vilimale’ Detention Facility. He was detained for 30 days, while the Thai national was held for 15 days.
Police stated that they were investigating the suicide with the relevant authorities, as well as the drug trafficking case.
