K. Guraidhoo Council President Hussain Yameen has been elected as the island council’s representative on the Local Government Authority (LGA) board.
Councilor Yameen, a member of the PPM, won the election by a narrow margin of 416 votes over his main opponent, Thoddoo Councillor Ahmed Karam, who received 414 votes.
According to Ahmed Shareef, President of the Elections Commission, seven people applied to be island council representative on the LGA board, including one independent candidate and five MDP candidates.
Furthermore, Fuvahmulah City Mayor Ismail Rafeeq was elected as the City Council representative with 24 votes, while his opponent, Malé City Mayor Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, garnered 21 votes. The PPM candidate from K.Atoll council who was running for the Atoll council representative on the board was elected by default since his opponent failed to complete the paperwork on time.
The Local Government Authority (LGA) is a state entity established under the Decentralisation Act to manage, oversee, and promote the constitutionally mandated local governance system.
