A local man who died while in Maldives Police Service’s custody has stirred controversy.
Police said on Tuesday that a 41-year-old man from GDh. Hoandehdhoo who was taken into police custody was taken to GDh. Madaveli Hospital after he showed signs of a seizure following chest pain.
Police said the man was taken to police custody on a rented speedboat which also had other civilians on it at the time. Doctors at GDh. Madaveli Hospital declared that the man was already dead when he was brought in, police said. As such, police said an autopsy will be conducted to find the cause of death.
Police also said the incident has been shared with National Integrity Commission (NIC) and Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM).
