The Maafushi Island Council has made the newly developed picnic island in Maafushi’s lagoon available to the public.
The council announced that the freshly reclaimed Maafushi Picnic Island, now officially renamed Vammaafushi, is now available to all citizens between 0600hrs and 1800hrs every day.
Tourists are also permitted to visit the island from Sunday through Thursday. Permission to access the picnic island can be obtained by calling the island council’s official contact numbers.
Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) completed the land reclamation and shore protection project at Maafushi Picnic Island.
MTCC recovered 2 hectares of land in the lagoon of Maafushi, Kaafu Atoll, and built beach protection structures around the reclaimed island as part of the project. The project was carried out to offer a public island where people might picnic and engage in leisure activities.
Maafushi Picnic Island’s reclamation and beach protection were completed at a cost of MVR 10.8 million.
