Maafushi Prison has opened a new medical center on the prison grounds, which began offering services on Monday.
During the opening ceremony, Vice President Faisal Naseem expressed optimism that the presence of more medical services on the prison grounds will improve the welfare and rehabilitation of its inmates.
He emphasized that the administration places a great value on improving prison conditions and rehabilitating detainees.
The vice president stated that all professionals working in detention and rehabilitation should strive to provide all offenders with the skills they need to work, provide for themselves, and become respectable members of society once they are released.
The new Maafushi Prison Medical Centre is designed to deliver services such as General OPD, emergency services, laboratory services, minor surgery, physiotherapy, X-ray services, and telemedicine services, which previously required inmates to be transported off the island to receive such services. A 10-person rehabilitation center is also part of the complex.
