Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) has published new designs of the new passenger terminal.
The terminal’s outer structure is designed to depict waves to bring the oceanic element. Meanwhile, the outer walls of the terminal resemble the walls of ancient mosques in the Maldives

The project was signed back in 2018 as Velana International Airport (VIA) is facing many challenges to keep up with the rising tourist arrivals rate in the Maldives. However, the project faced several delays due to the change in administration and COVID-19 pandemic.

The new passenger terminal which is set to be completed by the end of 2023 is almost 78,000 square feet and will include modern amenities and services. The project is worth MVR 5.5 billion.
