The People’s Majlis authorized a state budget of MVR 36.99 billion for 2022 today, including an additional MVR 73.8 million for PSIP projects on certain islands and increased financing for select state institutions.
The finance ministry proposed a state budget of MVR 36.92 billion to the People’s Majlis for the upcoming year.
But the Budget Committee amended the budget to provide MVR 57.4 million for PSIP projects on 82 islands, as well as an additional MVR 16 million for the People’s Majlis, the finance ministry, and seven independent government organisations.
The Department of Judicial Administration, Civil Service Commission, Family Protection Authority, Ombudsperson’s Office for Transitional Justice, Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC), and Information Commissioner’s Office are among the independent government institutions that have received increased budget.
The state budget was passed with the committee’s changes in today’s Majlis session by a majority of 64 members present, with 8 members voting against the budget.
During the budget discussion, Majlis members of the ruling MDP spoke in favour of the budget, while opposition members expressed worry about the budget’s large recurring expenditure and debt.
