The People’s Majlis has requested a copy of the agreement between India and the Maldives to build a dockyard and harbor development project at Uthuru Thilafalhu (UTF) for the Maldives Coastguard, Speaker Mohamed Nasheed said on Tuesday.
The request for specifics on the deal was made by opposition member and Maduvvari MP Adam Shareef, who claimed that the arrangement would jeopardize the country’s national security and sovereignty.
He went on to say that the agreement will “threaten long-term ties between the Maldives and India,” as well as “the maritime security of the Indian Ocean.”
To ensure that the agreements do not compromise national security, he stated in a letter that a copy of the UTF agreement, hydrography agreement, and Dornier aircraft deal with India must be given to the Majlis Committee on National Security Services (241 Committee).
Speaker Nasheed highlighted Shareef’s call for military agreements with India in his opening address for the session after returning to assume control of the People’s Majlis after a four-month absence while recovering from injuries incurred in an IED assault on May 6.
He stated that the People’s Majlis secretary general had conveyed Shareef’s request to the defence ministry.
Nasheed further stated that the deal is not “a closely guarded secret” and that it is “simply an agreement between two nations.”
