Tourism ministry published new legislation citing major changes to travel operators and agencies’ law in Maldives.
Tourism ministry stated these new rules will facilitate more opportunities for locals and it will make the process of forming and managing a travel agency more convenient.
Some of the new changes include a travel agency no longer requiring a physical office to operate. Moreover, no further inspection will be carried out regarding the office space and its services.
However, a travel agency is required to display their email address or phone number along with details regarding the person responsible for the said travel agency.
As part of the new rules, any travel agency consisting of a foreign national as an owner or board of director will not be allowed to operate in Maldives. Though, a foreign travel operator or agency can open an affiliate office in Maldives to represent the company.
More than 400 travel agencies are registered in Maldives and several agencies have been struggling due to COVID-19 pandemic and its devastating effect on international travel and economy.
