The Maldives set a record for the most visitor arrivals in a single day for the year on December 18, according to the Ministry of Tourism.
Official data showed 6,955 tourists landed in the Maldives on December 18, making it the highest single-day total of the year and the highest amount since the reopening of borders in July 2020.
The tourism ministry previously said that visitor bed nights for 2021 had reached 10.7 million by December 15, above the government’s aim of 10 million for the year. The tourism ministry anticipates the total will exceed 11 million by the end of the year.
According to the tourism ministry’s most recent figures, 1.2 million tourist visits were registered for the year as of December 15, a 148 percent rise over previous year but a 23.3 percent decrease over 2019.
The Maldives was named the World’s Leading Destination at the World Travel Awards (WTA) 2021 earlier this month, marking the second year in a row that the Maldives has earned this honor.
