The Government of Maldives has released a statement condemning the offensive remarks made by spokesperson of India’s ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) against Prophet Muhammad.
In the statement released today, the Government of Maldives unreservedly condemned all and any action that purports to pervert the true nature and teachings of Islam and attempts to demean the holy Prophet Muhammed (PBUH). Moroever, the Government of Maldives expressed deep concern regarding the derogatory remarks made by some officials of BJP, India, insulting the holy Prophet Muhammed (PBUH) and the religion of Islam.
Furthermore, the statement also read that the Government of Maldives welcomes the denouncement by the Government of India of the derogatory remarks by the concerned officials and the prompt action taken by BJP against those officials.
Earlier today, an emergency motion was filed at Parliament by the MP of Maduvvari Constituency, Adam Shareef to seek an official statement from the government condemning the remarks made by spokespersons of BJP, which was rejected after 33 MPs representing the ruling MDP voted against the motion.
Many Islamic countries including Pakistan, Kuwait, and Qatar have condemned the controversial remarks. While welcoming the BJP statement and suspension of staff involved in the Islamophobic remarks, many are expecting a public apology and condemnation of the remarks by the Government of India.
