President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih stated on Tuesday that Foreign Minister Abdulla Shahid being elected as President of the 76th Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) is confirmation that his administration’s continued diplomacy work has garnered worldwide recognition.
President Solih made the remark at a meeting with Minister Shahid in the President’s Office. He also congratulated Shahid on his landslide election victory, calling it a proud achievement for the Maldives.
Furthermore, Solih stated that the election victory is a step forward in improving the Maldives’ stature on the global stage and that he is hopeful that it would bring the country additional success.
President Solih also expressed his trust in Shahid and his future efforts as UNGA President and wished him success in his new position.
In the meeting, Minister Shahid lauded President Solih’s efforts in rallying support for his candidacy from UN member countries in the months preceding up to the election and thanked the President for designating him as a candidate.
Shahid also praised President Solih’s efforts to revitalize and enhance the country’s relations with the rest of the world, calling it one of the most significant diplomatic victories since the country’s independence in 1965.
The Maldives won the election for President of the 76th Session of the United Nations General Assembly with 143 votes cast at the United Nations Headquarters in New York.
President Solih nominated Shahid as the Maldives’ candidate for the Asia-Pacific Group’s turn, for the session beginning on September 14, 2021. This is the first time the Maldives has presented a candidate for the General Assembly Presidency.
